What happened
Reviews from Engadget and MacStories cover Apple's new Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip (two M5 Max chips combined), offering up to 512GB of unified memory, calling it a dream machine for running local AI agents and a massive leap over the M3 Ultra for prompt processing and generation. The M5 Ultra now has up to a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 32-core neural engine, up from 32 CPU cores previously. Memory is available in 96GB and 256GB configurations now, with 512GB coming next month. Prices jumped sharply: the M5 Ultra model now starts at $5,500, up from $4,000 previously, and a tested 2TB/256GB/36-core configuration costs $11,299, versus $7,499 for the equivalent M3 Ultra model, a jump of over 50 percent attributed largely to the 'RAMageddon' memory price crisis and Apple's markups. The companion M5 Max Mac Studio starts at $2,500, up from $2,000, with an 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 16-core neural engine and memory topping out at 128GB.EngadgetとMacStoriesのレビューが、AppleのM5 Ultraチップ(M5 Maxを2基結合)搭載Mac Studioを取り上げ、最大512GBのユニファイドメモリを備え、ローカルAIエージェント実行の夢のようなマシンであり、プロンプト処理と生成でM3 Ultraから大きく飛躍したと評価した。
Why it matters
AI professionals and power users get significantly more local compute and memory for running AI agents, but at a steep premium driven by memory costs. Engadget concludes the extra performance over the M5 Max model is only worth it for select buyers.AI専門家やパワーユーザーはローカルでAIエージェントを動かすための計算能力とメモリを大幅に強化できるが、その代償として価格は急騰している。
What’s next
The 512GB memory configuration is coming next month.512GB
