What happened

Google said on November 3, 2026 that Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will be off by default for K-12 student accounts until school administrators turn them on individually. Google VP Chris Phillips said this follows input from schools, teachers, researchers and policymakers, and specifics on timing will be shared with schools in the coming months before changes roll out. Separately, Google is piloting a Guided Learning feature in Search, starting with select U.S. schools later this month, which coaches students through problems step by step rather than giving direct answers; Guided Learning is already available in Google Classroom.

Why it matters

Administrators get finer control to enable or block specific AI tools, but TechCrunch notes that because Google has built AI into Search, schools that reject AI entirely will lose Search access, leaving students without a tool teachers may still want them to use for research.

What’s next

Google says it will share more specific details with schools in the coming months ahead of the changes taking effect.Google
