What happened
President Trump said on Saturday, September 19, 2026, in a Truth Social post that he will form an 'AI Force' and appoint an AI czar 'in the near future.' He likened the AI Force to Space Force, created by Congress in 2019 as a sixth armed forces branch during his first term. Trump rejected AI safety warnings as a 'hoax,' saying the U.S. would not 'hinder or stifle' the industry but would instead 'cherish it, help it, and watch over it.' He added that the government would address 'BAD' aspects of AI using the existing criminal and civil justice system rather than new regulation. Trump did not detail the AI Force's structure, authority, membership, or name any czar candidates.
Why it matters
The announcement comes after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing AI development and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he'd welcome a slower pace to keep capabilities from outrunning alignment and monitoring. It signals the administration favors accelerating AI growth over imposing new guardrails, affecting how the industry and Congress approach regulation.
What’s next
Trump said he will announce the AI czar in the near future. Establishing an actual new armed forces branch, as with Space Force, would require further action from Congress, and it remains unclear what the AI Force would be tasked with doing.
