EIA Form 861 survey data show US homes served by investor-owned utilities paid 17.8¢ per kilowatt-hour in 2025, compared with 14.5¢ at public utilities and 14.1¢ at co-ops. Since 2020, investor-owned prices climbed 34% while public utility prices rose 19% and co-op prices rose 19%, against 24% inflation over the same period. Most of the gap opened between 2020 and 2023, during an energy price spike, when investor-owned prices jumped 25% versus 11% at public and co-op utilities.EIAのForm 861調査データによると、2025年に米国の株主所有の電力会社を利用する家庭は1キロワット時あたり17.8セントを支払い、公営電力の14.5セント、協同組合の14.1セントを上回った。
Why it matters
After adjusting for inflation, investor-owned prices actually rose 7.9% while public and co-op prices fell 4.3%, meaning millions of US households on investor-owned lines are paying real increases while others are not. Investor-owned utilities earn a return for shareholders on what they build, unlike public utilities or co-ops, which have no shareholders.
