What happened

MapQuest added a new feature this week letting users see locations of license plate readers from Flock and companies including Motorola Solutions (Vigilant), Genetec, Axis Communications, Axon, Leonardo (ELSAG), Neology, Rekor, PlateSmart, Ubicquia and Verkada. To use it, open the MapQuest app, tap the Layers icon, and turn on Surveillance; eyeball icons then mark camera locations, and clicking one shows the reader type (dome, fixed, pan/tilt) and exact coordinates. MapQuest did not say how it sources this data, and didn't respond to a request for comment.

Why it matters

License plate readers, used by law enforcement and for tolling, parking and repossession, have drawn criticism from civil liberties groups over mass surveillance and documented misuse, including stalking by officers and wrongful vehicle stops. The feature gives drivers visibility into how pervasive these cameras are in their area.
