What happened
OpenAI said on August 28 it began training an internal model that has resolved the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize problem and, per OpenAI, more than 100 other long-standing open math problems. On September 21, 2026, OpenAI and the Institute for Advanced Study announced the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, made up of nine mathematicians including Timothy Gowers, Edward Witten and Melanie Matchett Wood.
Why it matters
The group will advise OpenAI on reviewing and coordinating disclosure of math results and on academic standards, following an open letter from mathematicians, including Fields Medalists, warning of harm from labs racing to solve famous problems as benchmarks.
What’s next
The group says it is currently working on advising OpenAI how to coordinate release of the reported results and is inviting input from the mathematical community via a form.
