During Xi Jinping's visit to Washington, Chinese economists warned that Beijing's intense focus on AI development comes at the expense of tackling a severe broader economic crisis. Related reporting describes how China's leadership has made AI adoption a national priority, aiming to embed it across the economy and society by 2035, even as Chinese workers voice growing anxiety about AI taking their jobs. One example cited is Xu Peng, an actor whose short-drama work dried up after a studio canceled productions to use AI instead. Chinese social media reportedly carries frequent posts about workers fearing being 'distilled,' a term for having their data used to train AI models that replace them.
Why it matters
The warning challenges the outside perception that China's AI push is an unambiguous strength, suggesting internal economists see it as a distraction from deeper structural economic problems. Workers across industries, such as short-drama actors, are already experiencing job disruption from AI adoption.
