A New Mexico jury ruled in September that Meta misled consumers about how it protected data and curbed misinformation and hate speech, finding 43 million violations at $5,000 each. A judge reduced the resulting total, over $219 billion, to $25 billion, citing willful violations, duration, breadth and involvement of senior Facebook leadership.
